i own a ranch house and i want to take a wall out but the ceiling joist rest on the wall. i dont want a beam showing so is a nother way to hold the ceiling joist up its about a 12' span. i was thinking about useing the roof rafters to hold the ceiling joist in that span. with 2x6

How long is the wall that you will be removing?
Does the wall run parallel or at a right angle to the ceiling joists?
How wide are the ceiling joists?(4,6,8,10 inches..)

Could you post a quick drawing and a little more info on the following
size of ceiling joists
head room above ceiling joists
size of roof rafter
span of roof rafter.
Personaly I would not use the rafters for support. To much weight and if you get a heavy snow load you could be in for some real trouble, but if you have the room above the ceiling joists you might be able to create a beam set up . I have done this once but the wall that was removed was well into the center of the house and there was room to do this.
