ceiling fan height


we are installing a ceiling fan on a vaulted ceiling....due to the angle is there a certain lenght downrod that should be used or just personal preference? we dont want it to come down too low for walking underneath...the ceiling goes from 8 - 11 ft over 11 foot span

you will need to keep the blades off of the ceiling angle for one thing and with the light system many fans average about 6.5 ft to 7 ft off of the floor but for the vault you can keep the height of the fan down to where the vault meets the wall, 8 ft. So, that would be about a 3 ft down rod.

If your ceiling is at a steep pitch, say 10/12 or more, you will need to purchase a special piece. Not sure of the exact name; shroud, maybe? It's the decorative piece that attaches to the ceiling box and through which the downrod goes. The hole in the one that comes with the fan won't be large enough to accommodate a steep angle. And your local big box store isn't going to have this piece; I had to order mine from the internet.
