cantilever joist


how far out can i cantliever my second story add. can i hang 2 feet using 2x10x8s is 6 feet sistered with exsting joist enough .

cantilever joist


cantilevers can't go out any more than 1/3 of the length of the supported sect., so yes, you can do it but nail those sisters real good. Also keep the new joists on layout directly over the supporting wall studs. Cantilever joists should be installed w/ the crown down. whether 2x10's are good enough depends on how much wieght you're putting out there. If you're using cement siding or terracotta roofing, consider an upgrade
