Can I remove these beams?

I have a vaulted ceiling with 2 beams in it. The beams are made of a 2X6 on each side and a 2X4 in the bottom forming a "U". They were trimed out with finish wood and had lighing inside the "U" I want to remove these to open up the ceiling but am now wondering if these are stuctural or decorative. Any help or advise would me great.

I've attached a pic and hopefully it helps.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Most I've seen have been ornamental, not structural, although yours may be.

Probably not structural.
"Lighting inside"?
"Romex", pipe?
How are you going to deal with the ceiling, after you remove the "beams"?
Where are you going to re-run the wiring - that's inside the "beams"?
Just some things to consider.

It appears to be a newer home, so I might try to locate the builder, and ask them. They may have pulled the permits, in which case you should be able to get their name through your local building department.

There were 4 flourescent fixtures recessed in each of the beams. Those fixtures have already been removed and the wiring is completed (we are putting in cove lighting and replacing the fan with a fan/light).

This room was added on to the house in the mid 80's.

What type of truss do you have? If you have a scissor truss I would say it is decorative.

If you have rafters and no trusses I would say take a look at the ridge and see if there is a heavy beam there, if there is only a ridge board and no trusses, I would say they are tying your walls together and do not remove them as your walls could spread.

You can go to your local building department and ask for a copy of the blueprints for your home. They would have a set on file that way you can be absolutely sure if the beams are structural or not. Of course there would be a small fee attached.

NOBODY on this forum can give accurate information. You need to contact the architect who made your floor plan, or contact the builders of your home to determine if those are weight bearing or not.

DO NOT EVER ASSUME WHEN DOING CONSTRUCTION OR REMODELING, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER ASSUME!!!

Unless you KNOW they are not load bearing, DO NOT remove them.

Contact the Builders for your home, or the Architect who designed your home.

To find the Architects information, his/her name will be on your homes blueprints or "plot plan". should be on the cover to it, and accompanyed by a phone number, and the company's name and most of the time the company's address.

By FEDERAL LAW The Builders will have all information needed to contact them on your homes blueprints. Or at the minimum information to contact the architect's office direct.

Well after a bit more investigation, it appears the beams are tieing the walls together, so they stay. Was really hoping to get rid of them, but I guess I'll just rewrap them in wood to match the new trim that I'm putting on the new windows. Thanks for everyones input.
