can drywall be installed on ceiling with 2x6x21 joists in the garage

Hi,

I'm planning to get drywall installed on the bare walls and ceiling of my garage. It's 21' x 21' and was built in 1979. Ceiling joists are 2x6 and are 24" apart. Couple of them sagging a little bit in the middle ( maybe an inch or less). About half of the walls are facing rest of the house are already drywalled with 5/8" X rated. I read somewhere that 5/8" drywall is needed for joists 24" oc. I'm not sure if the joists can take the load of 5/8" X rated or even 1/2" drywall. I don't plan to add insulation or use attic as storage. So, there will be no live load. Since I live in earthquake country, I'm trying to be extra careful.

Forgot to mention that there is a huge beam ( 6" wide x 12" high ) in parallel with the joists in middle of the ceiling and tied to the ridge with 3 2x4s. It's probably there to make sure roof doesn't move.
A drywall guy came by and he thinks there will be no problem. Another guy who is a licensed contractor but has some other full time job said that I should add acouple of 2x4s between each joist and rafter to strengthen it.
Any opinions?

Thanks

Let's say the 5/8 drywall weighs about 4psf.
The area of drywall supported by each joist will be 21x2 = 42sq.ft.
Each joist will then be carrying 42x4lbs, = 168 lbs.
Using the established formula for calculating the deflection of a joist under load, and assuming a timber of 'average' strength, the increase in deflection of each joist at mid-span will be about 1.4".
Building codes stipulate maximum permissible deflection of joists in different circumstances. If the drywall is unplastered, this additional
deflection will probably just about comply, though you would need to check.
Deflection is usually the critical factor for joists in these situations; it is highly unlikely to actually collapse, unless most of the joists are defective in some way.

Thanks Tony, appreciate your reply.

So, if I decide to do something to brace the joists before installing drywall, what would be the best way to do it?

I would at least add some 2 X 4's from the rafters to the joist.
I'd also check that ceiling with a string and replace any really joist.

I'm with Joe on adding some 2by running from the rafters to the joists.

Think "truss" construction.

You should be able to raise any that are showing a slight sag as well.
