can 2x4's support 5/8 sheetrock?

hello,
in my existing garage , i plan to wire, insulate and shhet rock. the roof or "ceiling", is built with2x4's. it makes me alittle nervous to put up 5/8 sheetrock up there. will it support it? are there any other light wieght materails that anyone knows of that can be used instead? that are not ugly.any suggestions are welcome, even if they seem odd. like how about that fake tin plastic stuff?that might look stupid on a pitched ceiling, though? thanks

Is the roof stick framed or do you have manufactured trusses?

What is the spacing of the trusses/framing? - 16", 24", ??"

Run some long 2x4x16's perpendicularly across the top of the ceiling joists and attach to the joists (To spread the support of the 'new ceiling' among all the joists)

Then attach some 2x4's vertically. Do this near the centers of the joists (Dependant on the span)...attach from the ceiling joists up to the rafters to support the area.'

Make sure that you have the joists strapped as well 16 O.C....

...Simple and effective.
