Building my first wall, thoughts, suggestions?

I plan on starting the construction tonight so I wanted to run it by some other eyes. The door is 32"x78" and the other whole is for my media stuff. Anyone see any issues with this?

looks fine to me. if you're going to have openings, be sure to take into account any trim you may wrap the openings in if you're adding stereo equipment, etc. leave room to maneuver the units. is this going to be closed on one side? open between two rooms, but only parts of it?

Ah, trim..I didn't think of that! Hope there is enough room for trim on both the door and media space.

As far as the media part I'm buying rack rails to install and I'm going to have rack shelves for components.(http://www.parts-express.com/pe/psho...number=262-394) The front will be open(might add a glass door later) and the back will be accessible via the door.

Here is a picture of the space that will be covered.

yup, if you're making your own moulding for the casements and trim, as i do, you can make them however you want.
but if you buy the pre-made stuff, you need to take the width into consideration so the two sides don't collide! heh
do the door and casements first to be sure it hangs right, then continue on to the shelves. you may want to change the dimensions a bit to accomodate the moulding.

I think I may just move the media hole over to the left so that the left side is flush with that stud. Save me some wood and leave plently of room for molding.

Actually, if I do that I might run into the same issue on the left...at the edge of the left wall there is another door so I have to make sure that doesn't hit either.

1. Is this going under the center beam?

2. The framing as drawn uses way to much lumber. (use stud/trimmer at hole, remove other side studs and single stud at door/end wall)

3. The rough opening for the door is wrong. (door width + 2" x 82-1/2" high)

4. Leave room for elec. switch box and wide trim- may add some as brought out. Separate fan required at clothes washer, if enclosing.

Be safe, G

No, it's going where that closet is..notice the media stuff currently in there. That stuff has been removed along with the rest of the wall in that picture.

2. The framing as drawn uses way to much lumber. (use stud/trimmer at hole, remove other side studs and single stud at door/end wall)

Huh?

3. The rough opening for the door is wrong. (door width + 2" x 82-1/2" high)

Why 82-1/2", do I need 4-1/2" of extra space? The door is only 78" high so I was adding 2.5" for the RO.

4. Leave room for elec. switch box and wide trim- may add some as brought out. Separate fan required at clothes washer, if enclosing.

The outlet is going on the right of the door, I want the media center area to look clean. Washer is moved...and I'm talking about the back closet anyway.

Use the door and window hole framing to meet the 24" on center for wallboard. If they are within a few inches of standard 16"o.c. framing, that's fine. Example: in your picture, the window hole studs/jamb should run up to top plate---eliminating the two full height studs on each side of hole. Also the stud to the right of door is not needed as there is less than 16" from door to corner. You would save 3 extra studs.
Start layout from garage wall, over into the existing closet door opening, for wallboard 24" or 16" o.c.

I mentioned the washer because as a water source in a laundry room (fan required), I wouldn't want a moisture laden air to circulate to my electronics, they don't play well. Door rough opening height sounds good as you corrected, just leave some clearance under door for the return air from the media room with heat supplied if by forced air system. Be safe, G
