building kitchen soffit

We are putting up new kitchen cabinets. One wall currently has a soffit that the cabinets will go under but the other wall does not. What is the correct way to add a soffit to that wall so that both walls will match?

building kitchen soffit

Build a frame with 2x4's and drywall. Measure the dimensions of the existing soffit e.g. over hangs etc and replicate it to the new area.
