Building a header to support roof in NY

Ok, this goes along with my garage raising thread. I am looking to replace the current cobbled header mess in my garage with something a little more... correct. The total width is about 32', but I am considering doing two spans, one that spans two of the doors, and one that spans one (21' and 11' roughly) Right now I have 3 headers, each looks like a solid hunk of wood. They are supported between the doors with metal adjustable posts, on which are placed some 2x6 pieces in an inverted pyramid, with the ends of the adjacent beams resting on a 24" wide piece. There is about 6" between each header that is filled with random scrap pieces. I would really like to do away with this cobbled mess, and put in an actual header.

So how would I go about building a header myself, or what would it cost to have one built/buy a pre-built one?

Thanks.

You could ask the local lumber yard. Here is an idea of what you need to know: http://www.umass.edu/bmatwt/publicat...s_headers.html
Be safe, Gary
