Building Free standing Pergola over existing deck, need some help...

Hi everyone,

The kind people over in the painting section have graciously helped me out in re-staining our deck. I hoping that some of you could help answer some questions about a pergola.

We would like to build a pergola over our existing deck. It will need to be free standing. I guess my first question would be will this need to have footings or could it be attached to the joists?

We are going to be replacing the decking on our deck so digging footings (if we have to) shouldn't be a problem.

I think the size is going to be either 10 x 10 or 10 x 12.

Here are a few pics of our deck(s) We are wanting the pergola on the deck that is next to the house.

This is likely a call by the building inspector, I would start by talking to them. Maybe no permit is required at all, in which case you are free to design the pergola any way you like. Bear in mind that the Chicago area is subject to high wind, so whatever solution you arrive at, make sure the pergola is well anchored, you don't want it becoming a flying missile in a high wind event.

When your project crashes down on someone, what's cheaper; a ambulance/hospital/liable suit or a few extra taxes and permit?

If it is done right? Why would it crash down?

If built properly it won't crash down. No worries.

When pouring the footing, do we embed the 4 x 4 or use a column base like a Simpson CB or CBSQ?

The most important thing for your pergola is that it's properly braced so that it doesn't try to rack or wiggle. 4x4's can still wiggle even when embedded 3' in the ground. A6x6 will wiggle less. With proper bracing it will barely wiggle. High winds could cause your pergola to wiggle slightly or create an oscillating effect which which may cause the joints to fail which may...anyways. Embedded post are only as strong as the substate which surrounds it.

You can add bracing which can be decorative also. If you plan on roofing your pergola you may need a permit.
