Building a foundation.

The ground is very uneven, and we're totally new to this DIY thing. How would we go about building a foundation for a room-sized building?

Sorry about my lack of knowledge, a quick step to step guide would be really appreciated.

you need to get a book from lows or HD.

You need to know how deep the frost line is in your area, because you have to dig below that level.
The bottom of your foundation needs to be pretty level. It can be in steps if the ground is very slopped but get a book, its to much to type here.

Additionally, your soil type and the size and type of building will dictate the dimensions and reinforcement of the footing and foundation. If you don't have experience building formwork and placing concrete, I would not consider this a DIY project.

Your first call should be to your local municipality's building department to determine the minimum code requirements for your structure in your area. Then research (and ideally, experience) will dictate if the minimum code requirement will actually perform the way you want and need it to.

What kind of building is it? A house, a shed, a detached garage, a store?

You would need an on site inspection by the person who will draw up the plans. Your lack of experience will get you in trouble if you proceed without knowledgeable people to guide you.

IMHO - Foundation forms should be left to the Pros.

I agree with Ron and KCT; I strongly feel that this is a not DIY portion of any project.

I seriously suggest that you consider subcontracting this portion out to a qualified foundation/form company.
