Building Deck on top of Roof
My neighbor wants to build a deck on top of a little shed roof.
She wants to do it together with me. I have some building experience, and am intelligent enough to do things right, once I know what I'm doing.
I've never done anything like this before and wonder what the best way to go about it is.
She has a window right on top of this roof, which could come out and be a door. But framing a new floor on top of the roof would mean steps UP from the first floor out onto the deck. Or, do some crazy angled ripping of each floor joist so that they land flush to the window and are the full X at the end of the roof?
The roof is barely pitched at all. My inclination is:
Option A) Essentially frame the deck above and outside the existing roof, onto 6X6 PTs sitting on new concrete piers. Have steps up from the first floor through what is now the window.
Option B) This shed is so insignificant and unsacred anyway, that I would basically tear the whole thing down and build a deck in its place. Or, advice she build a nice deck off the rest of the house, maybe from the second floor instead of the first. Forget about the shed.
Option C: Bung up a railing and use the roof as the deck itself. .Would this require a rolled roofing or something that can be walked on regularly?
Any ideas on this, guys?
