Framer I agree with you 100% but a first time DIY building one? Did you see the other one the guy is trying to build on here with no diagonals, and thinks adding horizontal 2 X 4's is going to fix it?
Missed it.

You need to read these thread more clearly before responding with declarative statements regarding plans and designs. I assume you're referring to my thread where I clearly explained diagonals had been installed and the 2x4 horizontals were for footings while installing the framing.

You gave me some quick responses that would have been a disaster if I were a complete novice that had blindly heeded your advice. Folks posting here need to be able to rely on people actaully reading and interpreting the project details they provide.

Building a Deck

Was the door always there? Did there used to be a deck there? Just being curious here.

I built my deck 6" below the door threshold for snow etc. It got right up to the bottom of the door this winter. 4" would probably have been plenty as long as you shovel, but I wouldn't want it any closer.

Thumbs up

Building a Deck

Yes the door was there when I bought the house. Apparently a few years ago there was a very poorly built deck torn down. The 4X4's show it was about 6X6. There is a 2X8 or 2X10 the whole way across under the door, I checked.
I was thinking 2X12X16 for 2 ledgers (the 1 will be more like an end joist). Also 2X12 for beams. I figured 2X10 would be plenty for joists.
My one ledger board under the door will hang 3' past the house. I'm thinking I put a post at the end of it to also meet the last joist. Sound sensible? So my main support would be 2 6X6's at about 14', 3 6X6's at 7' (in line with the further back end of my house, and the ledger mentioned above. Roughly 9 2X10 joists...by the way my joists should rest on top of the beams not run into, correct? Obviously they will run into ledger
Joecaption... tell me more about vinyl lumber. Why have I never heard of that?
As far as frost line and a few other details... I plan on getting as detailed of a plan as possible together to present to my BI and he can help guide me through final details. I spoke to him on the phone and he said to have my plan as detailed as possible and I might only have to see him once.

Thanks everybody for all the help and feedback!
