Building bulkhead on side of house

My house was built with an unfinished bonus room that I'd like to finish soon. However, when the house was built, they ran the HVAC trunk and water heater exhaust flue haphazardly through the floor, so if I bulkhead them in, it would take a good five to ten feet of floor space.

I'd like to build the bulkhead (or have it built) up the side of my house from the crawlspace area to the attic and route that HVAC trunk and the water heater exhaust through it....but, I have no idea where to start to even get educated about this. I know the water heater duct has to be at least 6 inches away from combustibles, but are there any other considerations I should keep in mind? Does anyone have a good reference source I could check out? I already contacted my local building codes department, but they weren't much help. Is this even a realistic possibility?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Call your HVAC guy they will be more able to assess your requirements.

Actually I did talk to them. They just said build a bulkhead in the bonus room, but I'd like free up all the floor space if possible. Running the duct through a different path seems like it wouldn't be a problem, though. Just cut in the crawlspace and run new stuff down the bulkhead. I'm just not sure where to start on the construction of the bulkhead as well any possible codes issues with running an exhaust vent and HVAC trunk so close together.

The HVAC guys are the ones who will design a new path for your duct work as they will do a new heat and loss calculation. The more elbows you put in your ducts the more heat you will lose. Iím not a HVAC guy but I am on construction sites a lot and I do talk to a lot of peopleÖ
