Building 12" lighting soffit above peninsula

Planning my rainy day work
Building a lighting soffit over what will be a 3' x 7' kitchen peninsula that borders the sunroom

Option #1 Light soffit will be either 7' long (square) to match the peninsula

Option #2 soffit will extend past the pensinula -in a rounded curve back to the wall

Option #3 Soffit will curve back to the wall & be the sdame length as the pensinsula

I've never built a curved soffit....what do I use?
The soffit will be covered with sheetrock

Soffit will be 12" to allow 6" cans, but I will be using (3) 4" cans spaced about 28" apart
1st one will be 14" in from the left
Last one will be 14" in from the right
One the right will be the open 40" doorway to the sunroom
There is already an existing wire for what used to be an outside light

Building 12" lighting soffit above peninsula

I've often done it this way.

Cut two identical pieces of plywood. One for the top, and one for the bottom.

Fasten the top one up to the ceiling after you have installed (screwed) the 2x4 cripple studs onto it.

Then just screw the bottom one to the bottoms of the studs............... Put your lights in, and you're ready for drywall.

Of course, you can pre-cut the appropriate holes for your lights in the lower plywood. Same thing with A/C vent holes. They don't have to both be made exactly like I showed them....... Just be sure the outer curves are the same.

I usually make their centers hollow so I can feed wires and ducts down through the top.

BTW, for any of you that have SketchUp.................

When any of us make drawings, we can send the actual skp files to you via e-mail, so you can play with them on your own computer.

At least, I THINK that can be done.

I forgot to mention
There isn't any ceiling above
The left side will be against a wall
The right side soffit will end about where the grey drywall ends
All the grey drywall/cabinets are coming down, as are the brown cabinets

I kind of dig the "suspended" look, using chains or chrome rods from the ceiling. But you could always utilize wide steel "L" brackets hidden behind the drywall on the side walls. They carry a lot of weight... often used under big granite countertops.

And for making curved walls....... 1/4" drywall, installed while soaking both sides with a spray bottle of water will make smooth bends. Let the first layer dry, and double it up with a second layer. They dry stiff again in a couple of days.

It will be attached to the LVL, so plenty of support
I'm not sure I've seen 1/4" drywall......but I haven't looked
