brick chimney that needs some help!

hi,

i have a 1888 house that has a brick chimney. the previous owner had it "repaired" by putting a coat of stucco on top (without any metal lathe) a couple of years later, it is just chipping and falling off. To me (and i'm no expert!) it looks like someone put different bricks in place to repair areas - because they are different colors.

is it advisable to remove the stucco and re-point the bricks or should i use metal lathe and cover it with stucco again? And finally, if i use a metal lathe, how do i attach it to brick?

thanks so much for any info!

To me it looks like that chimney needs to be rebuilt, going over it with stucco seems like a temporary patch.

But I am not mason and I am sure one will chime in.
