Boxing in Overhang with vinyl

Here's the small problem I have Cedar siding on the House, and when I run the J or F channel, I will have Gaps along side the House, But I could snap a Line and cut the siding off, then would youadd some thin type of Foam Board maybe like 1/4" or less. Iam no expert sider. did my gable this past summer and it turned out Nice on my New constructed Porch.

Use F molding or far better vinyl cove molding. It's sold at better siding supply stores. It's made to look like cove from below but has a 1/2 slot on the top to support the soffit.
