Boring through supporting beam

We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel. We want to move the AC vent over but there is a 1X12 between where the vent is and where we want it to be. Can I bore a 6" hole through the 1 X12? Oh, this is on the bottom floor of a two story home and the beam is already sistered to another 1 X 12.

Not sure why there would be 1 X 12's used other then for shelves. Sure you do not mean 2 X 12?
If it's 2, 2 X 12 then that's what holding up the middle of the house

welcome to the forum!

are you asking if you can bore through a floor joist? I believe if it is a floor joist it would be 2x12 not 1x12.

this link will provide you with the prescriptive code requirements for notching or drilling floor joists. you will notice that none of the sketches provide for removing 50% of the depth of the joist.

It might be possible, but you will have to do some additional framing to transfer the load to the adjacent joists. You can't just cut out 50% of the joist anywhere without adding some framing, and it really depends on how far along the joist you are with regard to how large of notches and holes you can make (which are all less than 50%).

Take a picture and post it as well, if its truly a 1x12, that would be strange.

Yes, 2 X 12, not 1 x 12

And we ordered a steel reinforcement plate to reinforce the load as well. I just want to make sure we are doing it right the first time. I di not want to cause any structural damage to the house.

Ok, I will get photos if needed, but this is a 2x12 pine joist. It is also sister-ed with another 2x12. From what I've seen, we can run a 6" hole through a double 2x12 joist. Correct? Anyone know of additional framing required? I know this cannot be done through a single 2x12, but if it's sistered...

A simple call to your building inspector will get you your answer. He/she has to inspect it anyway. Will you call and ask? Do you have permits?

If someone spec. A doubled up beam that wide there's a reason.
Check the hundreds of older post asking how to level there sagging floor cause by cut or sagging main beam. Now there facing having to replace or lift the beam.
