Books that teach the basics of construction - recommend them to me?

I was unsure where to post this, but this seemed to most relevant part of the forum.

I'm an architect student on the 3rd semester and I need to learn the basics about construction ASAP.

Im 29yr and never had any contact with construction prior to the architecture course - So, I need a book for beginners, absent of complex parts. I need the basics.

What I really wanted is a book that tells step-by-step what is to be done on the construction of a simple concrete house. From the preparation of the land, to a simple pillar structure, to the roof and everything in between. Nothing complex.

Can anybody recomend me 1 or more books? I'll buy anything I can put my hands on about basic construction books. I'll buy them on ebay.

I think it might be---I gave the book away long long ago---

Good start for a for a complete greeny.

We used this book in one of my classes and it was very good.

You know I was thinking and I always think it is easier and quicker to pick things up if I do and see them rather than read about them.

What about volunteering at a habitat for humanity build or contacting a local builder and asking him for a tour of one of his sites with and explanation of the process.

I'm assuming you aren't in Austin since you are asking about a concrete house but if you are I'm happy to give you a walk through.

Oh'Mike - Is that the one :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/140...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I think I'm gonna buy it.

Broughton - I've located yours on amazon too, but WOW! Pretty expensive!

http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Carpent...2490378&sr=1-1

Why is it that expensive? Is it much better than the others?

Yes, for sure, I'll do the pratical part too, but on my free time I want to read about it. Sorry, I wrote it wrongly, not a concrete house, but a house made with masonry (tiles, bricks, cement).

And yes, you guessed right, I'm not on Austin, heheh, I'm in Brazil.

Gabriel.

Here's one I've used.

http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Pra.../dp/0130496626

Same picture on the cover as one of the others, but different author(s). Kinda weird.

oh'mike 08-04-2011 04:57 PM

Yep!---The book is old but excellent for gaining a basic understanding of practice and technique.

I purchased the book oh'mike suggested; at the price it seems a great value. Or it could be my book addiction.

Will try to report back about it...

Also, my favorite book since buying my house has been "Codes For HomeOwners".

Looks good! But that edition is pretty expansive.

Do you know if the two books below are exactly the same? Because the black-and-white one is much cheaper :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/013...F8&me=&seller=

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/013...sr=1-4&seller=

Its the same authors, but the title is slightly different.

OH'MIKE

great, added to my list.

STUART

These are books written by Vitruvius, the roman architect?

CODERGUY

This is the edition I bought:
ev Exp edition (June 1, 2007)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1402743165

That is the other one; it is great. I really like the diagrams in it. I remember one night my wife asked me how the whole "air behind water" thing worked for plumbing. So I whipped it out and showed her the big whole house plumbing diagram. I mostly use it for reference in regards to stuff like that.

Amazon already shipped the other book; I may get it tomorrow (Amazon Prime).

costafinkel 08-05-2011 12:32 AM

ok man, thanks! I'll look into it.
