block fondations or something else?

I am looking into building a new home and would like to know what the limits are for the length and heigth limits are for a foundation. I would like to be able to have a large shop under the house.

is it better to used CMUs, cinder blocks, concrete, preformed walls, etc.

thanks for the help and recomendations.

Daniel

You can use either poured concrete or concrete block. You can get the same strength either way.

If you want a wall higher than normal, you will need to have it engineered. For higher walls, 12" block will allow you to less steel than an 8" poured or block wall.

For a normal basement wall, look at the 2006 IRC code for foundations. The requirements will usually be less than what an engineer will come up if it is designed from scratch.
