Blind/False valley vs. True valley for dormer

Hey Gary,

Do you by any chance have any close up pictures/diagram of the valley board construction (with bevel)? Sorry, I'm not entirely following your directions.

Joe,

You don't bevel the valley. If you want you can but there is no reason at all to do it. Your framer will show you when he puts it in. It is very simple once you see it

Blind/False valley vs. True valley for dormer

Hi Joe,

Yeah, I'm thinking it also must be one of those things you just have to see. I figured I'd be able to understand it anyway when I got to it, but at this point a regular framer will be doing it, it seems, so it doesn't really matter I guess.

Blind/False valley vs. True valley for dormer

I just built this type of roof last summer/fall/winter. I did bevel the edge of the vb to give the sheathing something solid and flat to nail into. All the angles took a little while to figure out.
The ridge did not fall on a main-roof rafter. To carry the ridge on the main roof, I put a small header on the inside of the main roof between between the rafters.
The straws sticking up will show me where it's safe to cut holes for venting.
