Hi, please see attached pic. In my attic under all the insulation is this substance. It's between the batt and the vapor barrier over the ceiling causing the insulation to rip a little when pulling it up.
Is it the result of attic condensation leaking through the insulation and dying there? Or maybe rodent urine? There have been A LOT of mice in this attic in the past.
Again, that is from the Blown Insulation. Nothing to worry about. Old paper will look like that from how high the temp can get in an attic, and low humidity levels. Attics are great for Mummification.
Looks like the paper face of the bat insulation. The paper face of old insulation had tar like like substance in the paper to create the vapour part of the barrier.
Maybe this piece was a bad example. There is no paper facing on any of the insulation. There is poly vapor barrier between the plaster board and the roof joists.
Fairly dry. A little tack to it. I'm leaning towards dried condensation with dirt from the attic in it or mouse pee but i think my attic would stink like ammonia with that much rodent urine in it. There is dead mice and feces EVERYWHERE up there though.
I think I might save money to have all the insulation sucked out, VB removed, attic floor coated with spray foam, and loose fill to code on top. The only thing that sucks about that is the insulation fixed to the top of the ceilings.
