Best way to protect new cedar deck?

We have a new cedar deck and want to maintain it properly but not do it every single year. Does anyone have personal experience with solid stains, as opposed to semitransparent or semi-solid? Someone told us the solid stains can flake up. Any help appreciated. Thanks
