Best tool for cutting metal nail plates
I am in the process of tearing down an old pool deck. The frame is connected using plates that have 4, 3 inch nails on each side. I am trying to salvage the lumber as it is still in great condition and I would like to save it for future projects. My question is would it be practial/quicker to use a Reciprocating Saw or angle grinder (or something else) to cut the plates at the seams? I tried using a pry bar but I was damaging the wood and it was impossible to use it in the corners. I'd say the metal plates are roughly 1/10 inch thick. Any help would be great.

Paul, Welcome to the Forum

I am not sure of what your 'plates' look like with out a pic, But if they are anything like Reinforcing Angles, I would use a small Japanese style double ended Cat's Paw to pull the nails.

Here is an example of a Japanese Cat's Paw

Thank you for the reply Bob. I bought something very similar to what you suggested and it was very difficult removing the nails. Also very time consuming. The Angles you also posted are the ones i am trying to remove. There are also flat ones in the middle of the board.

Paul, If you bought a Cheap Cat's Paw that has a single end then you bought the wrong tool for your application. Cat's paws with a single end are great as a general purpose nail puller, but to get between the heads of nails and a steel plate, you need the small end of a Japanese style tool similar to Cat's Paws - Lee Valley Tools

* What does the tool you bought look like?
* Can you post a Pic of your reinforcing plates?

Maybe try a SuperBar - often reached for in my tool bag for prying and nail pulling chores.
