Beginning to plan finishing basement - insulation question

Hello,

I am planning to finish our basement over the summer in my spare time and would like some advice along the way.

My first question is about insulation. The basement is a poured foundation and mostly below ground level. Currently, the top half of the basement walls have 1 inch of a foil-faced insulation and the bottom half is just the concrete wall. I have been reading and reading, but I can't seem to find an definitive answer on whether I should insulate further with rigid foam. I plan on constructing 2x4 walls an inch or so away from the insulated wall. Would it be best to do nothing and frame as is, finish the bottom half of the wall with rigid foam, or do the whole wall over with rigid foam?

I am in Southern Ohio if that factors in. It can get down to zero degrees F here, but very very rarely.

Thanks for your help!

-Tim

i just did a job like that, i like running the insulation from floor to ceiling or at least the height of the foam board
do you have a french drain? that would also allow any sort of water or moisture to stay behind the foam board and be directed straight down into the french drain
that is usually the only insulation that i use in a basement. no batt insulation. that's me
also it keeps all your wall framing from touching the masonry the framing itself up tight to the foam board will hold up the boards

We have a sump pump. So, can I leave the top half with the foil insulation and do the bottom half with rigid foam and tape the joint between the two?

If your going to frame the whole thing you may as well insulate with some R-12 fibreglass or Roxul (if in or close to Canada). The 1" foil faces is r-5 max and if you live in a area with cold winters you'll want to go with R-12.

Is 1 inch of rigid foam on the walls going to provide enough insulation for southern Ohio climate?
