bearing wall question
Is this just something like a 36" passage door in a roof framed wall?
If so there's no need to support the ceiling. Leave the old header in place and just add a 2 X under it. Make sure to build a header and use jacks in the new opening. |

bearing wall question
use the opening size that the door is in now as the template for the new opening size or figure the rough opening to be 1" bigger than the outside of the door jamb measurement.
