Beams in Living Room Cracking

I have four beams in my living room that are splitting from top to bottom. We just bought the house and there was slight splitting but yesterday I heard a loud pop almost like a gun shot. I didn't know what it was. When my husband came home he noticed the cracks looked deeper and longer. Is this normal. And most of all is it safe.

Beams in Living Room Cracking

We need a lot more info. A picture would help immensely. How old is the house? What are the beams made of? Any recent changes in humidity (opening the windows, etc)? Structural modifications?
