bathroom vanity install questions

hi all - I'll be installing a new vanity in a new bathroom soon. I have a couple of questions:

1) the vanity is 48" and the top is 49 1/2" (3/4" overhang on the sides). The vanity is going in a corner -against the wall on the left side. This will leave a 3/4" gap along the side of the cabinet (under the overhang). Should I fill this space with a filler strip? Or just leave it open? How do you usually handle this situation?

2) should the tile baseboard be installed 1st, then cut out the bottom back corners of the vanity to fit over the baseboard, or install vanity first and butt the tile baseboard against the side of the vanity? this may seem like a dumb question but just want to be sure

thanks for any help....

1) I've seen this done three ways: The cabinet was centered on the top and the gap was left. The cabinet was centered on the top and the gap filled with a filler piece. The cabinet held tight to the wall and the countertop edge left to overhang at the end. Either way will function, but it's the look you're after that will drive the decision.

2) I'd install the vanity first...

1.) Unless you are the kind of person that looks under a vanity top everywhere you go and you can't sleep at night knowing there is a gap under your vanity I would leave it alone, install it and be done with it.

2.) Vanity first, always vanity first.:)

Thanks Bud and AG - so definitely vanity goes in first, and I can defer the decision on the best aesthetic option (filler, no filler, etc) to the better half (an approach that I'm slowly learning to appreciate). Thanks again
