Question

bathroom remodel

How do but up 5/8" backerboard used in tub surround, to blend with 1/4" backerboard used in the rest of the bathroom?

5/8" backerboard??? Never seen that. You sure it isn't 1/2"?

You're going to have to more clearly explain what you're trying to do, what you have to work with, etc. Tile? Pre-Fab surround? Pictures would help as well.

There shouldn't be any 1/4" backerboard on the walls. That's for floors. 1/2" is for walls.

like kctermite says, it seems the thicknesses are off, but I had an issue of 1/2" backerboard and 5/8" sheetrock at the edge of my tub surround:
5/8" Fireboard (Paint) meets 1/2" Cement Board (Tile)

Hope that helps a bit.
