basement subfloor refinishing - stairs

Hi there
Just looking for some advice on a project I'm about to start.

We bought a house with a "finished" basement where they put carpet and under pad directly on the concrete floor. Clearly this will have to go (I don't think its wise to put a sponge on a floor that might get wet - call me crazy.....)

Regardless of what which subfloor approach I use I will have to contend with the stairs. Its builders stairs right to to concrete so any subfloor will affect the rise of the last stair, probably more than the 3/8 inch allowed deviation by code.

I'd like to avoid replacement of the stairs. Any suggestions?

One idea I came across was to extend the bottom step into a 3 X 3 landing and then have the short rise from the floor to the landing.

Appreciate any helpful suggestions

Thanks

should work, as long as the landing is at least the same width of the stairs in the direction of travel, and as wide as the stairs then it should be classified as a landing.

a check with your local building official should clarify it

good luck!

Do you really see this as some sort of major problem?
