Question

basement digging

i had to dig out the bathroom portion of my basement as the drainage elements needed to be rearranged and will also leave it lowered for style and functionality.

needless to say, i had to dig further than the 7" that i will leave it caved in in order to maneuvre the plumbing. someone told me that it is a really bad idea to fill the same dirt back to cover it as it is never possible to pack it sturdy enough to support the structure coming on top (gravel, concrete, and the whole 9 yrds ...) and warned me to try to be really careful not to dig more than necessary and whatever make-up is needed it be done with gravel before i pour the slab.

i initially had planned to put some of the dirt that i had excavated, before, of course, the gravel and concrete.

thoughts please - thanks in advance !!

Hello amakarevic, What someone told you makes allot of sense

I would definitely use gravel to fill it in.

My friend was telling me the other day about gravel made of recycled concrete, He claims if you hose/wet it down, It will somewhat stick together.

I have never used recycled concrete gravel, But it's possibly cheaper and better than regular gravel.

Good luck!

Dirt is worthless unless you want to grow something.

Fill with good old gravel or base material. Recycled is OK for use in asphalt and the cementing properties are virtually nil.
