Basement/crawlspace question, what to do??

The Basement of the house is about 70/30 full depth basement/crawlspace.
It's because of where the water & sewer com in (it was built in the early 40's) The crawlspace is just dirt biseng hld back by a cinderblock wall. I've been paying the boys to remove the dirt that's abouve the dividing wall.

Ballpark the area is about 12' x 12'. I'm torn between the expense/work of pouring a slab over ther or just putting some plastic down & framing a wooden platform over the dirt. It's never been wet over there other than when the kitchen drain backed up & I needed to cut the pipe to replace it.

I'd obviously leave access to the cleanout as well as other pipes that will need it.

Basement/crawlspace question, what to do??

question .........

how deep is the foundation for the crawl space section? we know in the full basement section it obviously is as deep as the basement floor. have you dug down on the outside of the crawl space foundation to see before you started digging out the inside? typically they would not put in a deep foundation wall if it was going to be a crawl space.

digging out the interior may undermine your foundation if the foundation (for the crawl space) does not go as deep as your are digging.

Basement/crawlspace question, what to do??

The house is a split level, Basement in the front ground level in the back. I have 2 coarses of block above ground level outside. The height of the full section is only around 7' or so.

I've dug down about another 14-16" or so in one spot of the crawl space to repair the kitchen sink drainline, and there's still cinderblock (I don't recall hitting a footer). That puts it somewhere around 24-30" to the slab in the full part. They'd at a minimum had to of gone to the frost line, I'd hope anyway

I think they did it this way as the sewer pipe would be at around waist height crossing the entire basement, and make the side where the crawl spoace is totally useless.

just wanted to make sure you had checked this out before undermining foundation. Just had a project where the homeowner had planned on doing this, which in their case would have undermined their foundation

The boys (9 & 7) are still digging to get it to the level point. Hoping to have it there this weekend. I'll start digging near the walls after that. (I might fit a little better. I have a few other things to tidy up (some wiring, & remove some old plumbing) as well.
