We live in an older home - roughly between 150 and 175 yrs old - not considered a historical structure. We have remodeled extensively in the last 10 years and recently discovered the main support beam in the basement, as well as 2 of the floor joists (trees with the bark still on them) have failed. I have a shore under it right now to support the house, but need guidance on whether to replace the beam and joists with wood (like a trilam) or steel. How do I calculate the load capacity requirements as well as spacing requirements necessary?
Current main beam is 14 ft long X 10" tall X 8" wide and is (I presume) oak. The remainder of the floor joists appear to be either oak or ?? I know driving a nail into them is near impossible.Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
