Baseboard trim nail size ?

For installing typical .75" x 2.25" wood baseboard over 5/8" drywall, what is the usual gauge and length of the finishing nails ?

I was thinking 16 gauge, 2.5" length, but several places I've checked seem to have nothing longer than 2" in either 18 or 16 gauge. That would only place 5/8" into the stud; would that really be enough ?

Thanks,
Arky

I'd use 2 1/2' nails.
Baseboard molding is not 2 1/4". That's window or door trim.
