Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on leveling the hearth base area? I is made up of some rough concrete in the center and wood sub floor on the sides. The granite people want something level and smooth to install to. I didn't know if self leveling concrete like Henry's or just plan mortar to smooth this base would be best. I can add 1/2".
A neighbor came over and suggested backer board as a possible solution. Maybe lay down som thin set and place the backer board into it to level?
I can't tell how level the underlying concrete base is. My answer assumes it is fairly level. Since you only need about 1/2" of material, I would opt for your neighbor's suggestion of using 1/2" concrete backer board placed onto a thinset mortar with the thinset applied evenly over the entire concrete area. Then, place the backer board onto the mortar and "vibrate" it into place with your hands to assure complete contact between mortar and board. Check side-to-side and front-to-back level and make adjustments as needed. I used concrete backer board under my fireplace hearth and mantle and have had no problems with it.
