Balcony options in NYC

My building in downtown Manhattan is looking to rebuild a wall and put up new balconies. There is a concern about light and I'm looking for options that would allow more. Now we have traditional metal 36" deep fire escapes with the stairs removed. We want and probably can go wider, we've been told out to about 7 ft. That's where the light question comes up. I'm having trouble searching for solutions and options. Any ideas?
Thanks
