Iím thinking of adding a framed awning over my French doors to the back yard to keep off much of the snow/rain and to provide some shade. The area of the wall above the doors where I would need to attach the awning is fiber-cement siding. I would prefer not to disturb the siding.
So to avoid attaching directly to the wall, Iím thinking of ďhangingĒ the close end of the awning from the rafter tails exposed in the open soffits. I would sandwich the tails between two 2x6 dropping straight down (parallel with the wall) just far enough (a foot of so) to attach (again sandwich) the near end of the awning rafters.
I realize that many more aspects of this project would have to be accounted for before green-lighting. Right now I would be grateful for any thoughts on the feasibility/pitfalls of the rafter tail idea.
