In a way I prefer a stone patio...it won't rot
Zero chance of it falling, usually will not cause the house to rot

Thats what I was thinking, by the way nice renovation link.

I've considered not doing the door and just doing a stone patio BUT that would leave the house with no really easy way to get into the backyard. I Looooove grilling and i love eating outside. Right now we grill in the driveway and eat at the patio table on the lawn .... not very optimal. I just think it would be so much easier to open a sliding door and having the grill and patio table right there on the deck - same heigth - no steps etc.

No doubt the deck will look great there, ours is set up that way walking out the door right to the same level is nice. especially for grilling .

This would actually make the operation "fairly simple" - i'd be looking at a 16x16 freestanding deck somewhere around 30" off the ground with railings on 2 sides and stairs on the 3rd.

Thanks for your input - do yo have any pointers on what to use to design the deck?
This reference is a goof place to start: http://www.awc.org/Publications/DCA/DCA6/DCA6-09.pdf

The big issue is that you should have undisturbed soil under the footings nearest the structure, so you often have to go back a few feet and cantilever toward it.
