I noticed some rot on my siding just above the deck board on my back yard deck. My house is "L" shaped and the deck was built along both walls of the interior angle of the "L" shape. I pulled a few decking boards and besides finding a few shockingly large spiders I found that the builder of the deck was an idiot. The 2 ledger boards were nailed directly onto the siding of the house and of course no flashing was used.
My feeling is that I am going to have to tear down the deck, replace both ledgers properly, add flashing, and rebuild the subdeck and redeck the top. Oh, and repair the siding in the process. Can anyone with a lot of experience in decking please confirm this for me or tell me that there is an easier way??

I would tear down. And properly remove the siding and flash it correctly. Use the PVC flashing as it won't corrode with the pt framing. Use grace ice and water behind the deck ledger board as well

It is a flexible rubbery flashing used on roofs. Place it behind the ledger to prevent water from getting in where the ledger locks go. Fastenmaster makes these and they are in place of lag screws
