Alum cap over old wood drip cap?

Hi all. Hoping someone can help me. I resided my house and had the wood window and door trim capped with aluminum for maintenance. My windows have a wood drip cap at the top (like a top sill) that extends beyond the window trim about 1" on each side. This was capped as well, but there's a problem for water infiltration at the "ears" that stick out (they were sawcut on the ends to let water drain behind). Anybody willing to take a look for any ideas? The sawcut appears to allow for water to drain into the J-channel below, but the water must pass over the sawcut wood first. Perhaps a seam of sealant over the wood would protect the wood from moisture.

Alum cap over old wood drip cap?

Thanks. The old wood dripcaps make for a bad situation but the original details were important. Redoing the whole job is not an option financially. (at least not for a while...) Is there another way to address these ends without tearing it all off?
