Alternatives to Fiberglass Attic Insulation

My coworker has an older house here in San Diego that does not have ANY attic insulation. He'd like to get some put in, but does not want the conventional fiberglass rolls (too itchy) NOR the blown-in cellulose (too messy). I know that for most readers, probably the initial instinct is to argue his reasons for not liking fiberglass or cellulose ... but if we can just overlook them ... Is there a reasonable alternative? Can you get rolls of cellulose? That would be non-itchy and non-messy....

You could have re-cycled newspaper

or sheepswool

BTW my travel agent told me that it never gets too hot or cold in San Diego.

You can get encapsulated fiberglass that is wrapped to reduce itching.

Another option is spray foam (usually pretty expensive).

If he doesn't need much R value in San Diego he could cut foam boards to fit between the joists and spray foam them in. Or he could place the full 4x8 foam sheets on top of the joists (cutting around obstacles) and tape the seams.

But fiberglass or cellulose is a lot easier.

recycled bluejeans! I think you can get it in rolls from either lowes or homer..... $$$, but it's a DIY, and it doesn't have any formaldehyde either....
