air compressor

about 3 years ago I bought a 17 gallon Kobalt air compressor and have had quite a few problems with it. Rather than this thing costing me a ton in repairs not to mention parts are kinda of hard to get because the neighborhood lowes employees aren't any help I am looking for a new compressor. I am looking for feedback on some good compressor ideas. I have a home remodeling business, not to mention my own house is in a constant state of remodel. Just finished laying 3/4" hardwood floor in living room and hallway with all new baseboard and interior doors and a new front door and am planning a 1800 sq. ft addition next spring. any compressor I use is going to need to really perform not to mention be able to take the constant moving from home to jobsites. would like to know experiences with different compressors what you may know about warranties and overall quality of the compressors anyone here uses. thanks.

I've had a Campbell Hausfeld 20 gal unit since the mid 1980's . The only issue I've had was when the pressure switch went bad in 2004.

I've got 3 old compressors that I've found the parts On-line for,+ rebuilt myself...

protective casing snapped off. had to replace bleed valve 4 times, valve sits so low to ground, broke off many times loading and unloading on trailer. have had air leaks from various points the one now I have no idea how to fix. fan wouldn't turn etc... I have two businesses to run plus have two part time jobs ( want my wife to stay home to raise my 3 small children and I have plans that I am trying to build up capital for.) don't really want to take the time to fix this type of stuff myself. It is much more cost effective to let someone else do it, or just buy new.

It's a compressor unfortunately it is a disposable item. Buy one and hope it lasts. Go with a name brand. Some will last for years and others, well they will have problems.

if its for serious use dont buy current gen porter cable
rol-air, makita, and iron horse all make top notch air pigs

I read about a tankless compressor that is run nonstop and very light. It was expensive, though. I think it was 6-800.00. Sorry that I can't remember the brand, and I don't know anything about its reliability, history. I saw it at the Graingers. It wasn't cost effective for me, no sense throwing out the old one. But it may make sense for you. Thinking back to all the years I carried the twin tanks up and down the apartments.

I had a Porter Cable Pancake, home use...lasted about 4 months, woke up to the sound of it running, the crankshaft broke and the part was more than a new unit. Porter Cable wouldn't fix it...said I "abused" it by not unplugging it when not in use. I replaced it with a Sears...15 years and still going strong.

You can find the pancakes at Harbor Freight....about $60 on sale...that's truly a disposable one.

You guys do realize this is a 3 year old post that got dredged up yesterday. good info but the one hit wonder that resurected it probably won't be back
