I have a finished basement which is accessed by stairs which have a finished sheetrock wall on one side as shown in picture. I would like to build a finished storage area under the stairs which will require the removal of the 2 x 4 studs that hold the sheetrock face. The stair treads are routed into the sides of 1 x 12s which are secured with wedges (see pic).
My question is if the stair construction can be self supporting if the 2 x 4 framing is removed? The stair construction seems to have been built with good quality methods (late 70's construction) and typically I thought stairs would be built without the reliance on vertical framing to maintain it's safe useage.
Thanks Joe for the advice. So 1x 12 stringers are adequate to supporting the stairs by themselves. Most basement stairs that i've seen (i'm not a builder) were more often 2 x something stringers. That's good and yes i plan to sheet rock the opened up area.
