I am curious-I was looking at the adjustable lally columns the other day (the ones that are for permenant use and only have 4 inches of adjustablity) and I noticed that when you turn the threaded rod for the adjustment, the support plate that would sit on the concrete or main beam also turns with it. Is this normal? How would you be able to adjust the post when it is in place because the support plate would be permenantly affixed with bolts (or encased in concrete). Or do you just measure the length, adjust it to the appropriate length, and then used a mallet to squeeze the post into place (and do not use the post to actually jack the beam up?)
Just was curious to see if this is normal or whatnot!
With most of the ones I've seen, the plate spins while you're adjusting, only until sufficient contact friction takes place. At that point you adjust the plate so that it is in place and tighten more, raising the beam if desired.
