Addition to a veneer brick house

What's the best way to tie an addition onto a house with brick veneer without takeing the brick off? I would think that I will need to anchor through the brick to the stud wall so all the support is not on any of the brick. Thanks for any info.

The "best" and correct way is to remove the brick within the construction area, so all of the framing members can be connected properly. This will also allow a mason to weave the brick joints back together for a proper connection, as oppossed to a straight line cold mortar joint, which will always crack .

Drilling through the brick and trying to anchor something to the studs with a 9 ' lag screw has no structural integrity.

It depends upon the design. Sometimes you will want the connection to be a soft joint and others you will want to tooth it in with the existing brick. Generally, a soft joint at a natural turn of plane is best while an in-plane joint should be racked back and toothed.

In the circumstances of attaching an addition, there is no a way in the world, that you can leave the brick veneer on the main structure (at the addition location).

It HAS TO be removed, in order to properly, and securely, attach an addtitional structure to the home.
