Adding stone to existing brick chimney

My fireplace is surrounded by rock to the ceiling 6' wide x 10' tall. The cinder block chimney above the roof was never finished with the rock (built in 1956.) What is the correct way to attach rock/stone to a chimney?

Is there a brick ledge in place around the base of the exterior chimney? For real stone you need that support.

My guess would be that there is no ledge, so you have 3 options:

Cut the roof penetration and carry the masonry on up, then repair and flash the roof. Repour the chimney cap to fit the expanded size of the chimney

Or, find a faux stone product that matches and stick it to the chimney (assuming that it has not been painted), then repour the cap to fit the expanded size of the chimney.

Paint the CMU to appear as rocks.

Isn't it possible to epoxy or cement the stone to the exposed chimney or, does it have to start below the roofing material?

yes, its possible to epoxy to cmu's,,, however, yours appears to have been coated/painted so you'd not be attaching to cmu,,, 'sides, you really need mechanical support/attachment otherwise you'll likely be back asking how to re-attach the pieces that've fallen off

another method's to attach metal lath & mud over it w/latex-polymer-modified mortar then mortar liteweight lavarock onto the chimney,,, for best appearance, you'd still have to repour the cap.

i'd have preferred to see a reglet for the existing flashing, too,,, consider that as well.

Thanks for your response

I was planning on stripping, scraping or sandblasting the paint off of the surface.

can you explain:
