Adding Stairs To A Deck

We currently have a deck that needs the stairs replaced. there is one stair at each of the of the deck and it is 48 inches wide. the heigth of the deck is 16 inches. I went to my local hardware store and discovered the pre cut risers. I am guessing that I would just cut the riser to fit. However, I am unsure as to how to attach it to the deck. are there brackets that i can use and how many risers will i need for a stair of that width?

Well that's interesting

If the distance to the top of the deck is 16" then you really only need one step
Split the distance in 1/2
So the top of the step should be 1/2 to the deck
Then the ground is the last step
I'm not sure I'd even buy stringers for this

Just build a box frame
Use a metal angle "L" bracket to attach the box to the deck
Then put the top of step on to cover the top of the box

If the top of the step needs to be at 8"
Subtract the height of the step "decking"
That is what you need for the box frame
I actually use the heavy duty PT thick stairs 1.25" thick
One piece instead of 2 pieces

If you use 2x8 PT you could cut the frame at a slight angle to correct the concrete
Or use 2x10 PT & cut down if a bad angle

Shimming might be a little unstable

The single piece step I use is 10" front to back, so the frame would be 9.25" wide
If using the reg decking then it would be around 11.5", so about 10.75" wide for the frame
You want about a 3/4" overhang on the front of the step
You also want support pieces inside the box to support ther steps
Either one in the very middle for the thick single step
or 2 spaced apart - 16" & 32" to support reg decking pieces as stairs

one more thing

since the height of the box will be 8 inches, that will bring it to roughly the bottom of the boards on the side of the deck. i would like to attach this to the bigger of the two boards shown in the photo. you mentioned L bracket. can you explain how i would do this?

photo would sure help here. 2 steps at 7.75 inches???

yes, there is a lot of strange things in this house. most of them we are discovering as we remodel. i am guessing that the owner at the time had lots of scrap wood leftover. it is made from 30 pieces of 2x4 with one long bolt going through the center. lots of work if you ask me and the stair on the other side is the same way:eek:

Code requires that each step be approx the same height (rise)
So with 16" to cover youy would normally have 2 steps 8" each

BUT, code also states that the MAX height of step is 7 3/4"
They can vary by 3/8" less, so all stair must be between 7 3/8" - 7 3/4" tall

If your deck was 15 1/2" off the ground you wouuld have
the landing (ground level)
1st step at 7 3/4"
Top of the deck at 15 1/2"

You said your deck is 16" off the ground
So by code you need (2) steps since you can't use a step over 7 3/4"
So one step at 5 1/3"
2nd step at 10 2/3"
Top of the deck at 16"
Measure your deck from the landing to the top of the deck
If its 15 1/2" or less you can use one step

I can't tell what you have for a landing?
