are there other house in your neighborhood like yours where this was done?look around and ask and again check your setback regulations good luck

Overkill. I've seen hundreds of homes (ranches and capes) expanded to become colonials. Never seen a 1-story house that couldn't be. Your 1st stop is a local licensed architect. 99% of your questions s/he'll answer within the first 10 minutes.
