Adding a room over garage

I have a building that is a 2 level walkout on a slope and I am planning on putting a garage on the front. The roof would reach up to the second level wall and I am wondering if I can add a room over the garage that I can use. I am not sure what type of roof style makes it easier and was thinking I could use the wood i-beams for the rafter bottom but am not sure what type of support is needed to replace the trusses. I am open to suggestions on what design would work best as I haven't started yet.
Thanks

Don't you need architectural plans approved before you build? This is especially important of tricky integrations into the existing structure. Do you have any experience with structural framing?
Posting a picture would help as what you would do depends on the specifics in place at this point.

Adding a room over garage

To answer your questions, my experience level is framing a few garages and boathouses and the person working with me has built his own home. No, I don't need architech's plans or permits. This is for my cottage that I own on a First Nations reserve
