Adding Mudroom in exisiting garage - Foundation question

I have searched this site and I have not found an answer to this question directly.

I would like to add a mudroom in my garage 10x4. This will reduce the depth of the garage by 4 feet. i have most everything worked out. My 1 question is some from of foundation. i was planning on digging out 2 10" holes for sontubes (filled with concrete) and running a double 2x8 across them. Then I will hang joists between these and a ledger hanging on the back wall of the garage. Framing and other fun to follow. My question is around the sonotubes. Are these suitable for this installation? Any helpful hints on the best way to dig out out the enevitable stones that will be in the holes? Is it OK to lay the 2x8's on the sonotubes or do I need to attached the lumber to the concrete somehome?

Thanks for any input.

Adding Mudroom in exisiting garage - Foundation question

If adding mudroom under cover of the garage why do you want a new floor for it?

Why not just use the existing concrete garage floor?

Andy.

Adding Mudroom in exisiting garage - Foundation question

I suppose a bit of background would help.

1. I live in NY where we get some significant temperature swings throughout the year.

2. I want to raise the floor to the same level as my first floor which is roughly 20" +/- from the garage floor. This will save space inside the room since the stairs will not be in the room.
